Statement Regarding Tennessee’s Adoption Discrimination Bill

The United Campus Workers Gender Equity Committee adamantly opposes any and all legislation which prevents LGBT families from having equal rights under the law. HB836/SB1304 is discriminatory and unconscionable. At its core, it reflects prejudice against LGBT people and causes undue suffering for Tennessee’s most vulnerable children. This bill sets a dangerous precedent in that it allows private adoption agencies to take our public funds and then deny the very same taxpayers equal rights. It also places the State in a position to determine who does and does not constitute a family. Simply put, this bill is unfair, harmful and hateful. We ask that Governor Bill Lee veto this legislation immediately. Please join United Campus Workers in opposing this bill by calling the Governor’s office at 615-741-2001.
